Get to Know the Students Demand Action Advisory Board: Megan Dombrowski

Megan Dombrowski joined Students Demand Action after seeing hundreds of students rise up across the nation to demand action in the wake of the shooting at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School. She was a leader with a local community chapter in Oakland and Macomb Counties before graduating high school and co-founding a chapter at Wayne State University in Detroit, where she is pursuing a bachelor’s degree in political science. She is passionate about helping register and mobilize others to vote as it is the most powerful tool we have to make positive, long-lasting change.

What do you hope to pursue after you graduate?

Majoring in political science with a double minor in communications and pre-law.

Why is gun violence prevention important to you?

The first major news story I remember is the tragic shooting at Sandy Hook Elementary School. Over the next five years, I had become numb to the occurrence of school shootings, including when news of a shooting at a high school in Parkland, FL broke. Like always, I felt saddened by the loss of innocent life and cynical about how nothing would change as a result. It wasn’t until I saw a group of students rise up and come together in the wake of tragedy to demand that enough was enough, that I felt like change was possible and I could be a part of it. I immediately joined Students Demand Action to help save the thousands of lives that are senselessly lost to all forms of gun violence every year.

What are you most proud of working on as a Students Demand Action volunteer?

I am most proud of being able to help young people register to vote and make their voice heard in our political system. As a Students Demand Action leader at Wayne State University, we were able to secure a grant from a local organization that helped us pay students to become relational organizers and mobilize their friends and family members. As a result, we contacted more than 700 people, registered almost 100 students, and turned out nearly 200 young people to vote.

What public figure or social justice icon do you most admire?

One public figure that has inspired me the most is Hillary Rodham Clinton. I was just entering high school and becoming interested in politics when the 2016 election was beginning. As I researched more and more about Hillary Clinton’s life and civil service, I was immediately inspired. After having a remarkable career as a lawyer, senator, and Secretary of State, she became the first woman to accept the nomination for president of the United States from a major political party, leaving a crack in the highest glass ceiling. Even through the greatest adversity and scrutiny, she carried herself with grace and tenaciously fought for what she believed in.

What do you do for self care?

Playing with my dog Zoë! Whenever I have been working on homework for too long without taking a break, she’ll hop up on my lap, attempt to crawl on my keyboard, and demand I take a break to play with her.

If you could only eat one food for a year, what would you pick?

What motivates you to keep going?

As a Students Demand Action volunteer, I have meet many survivors of gun violence, and their stories, courage, and hope are what motivates me to keep going.
